The 2008 Winter Bluegrass Concert

Louie Setzer and the Appalachian Mountain Boys will headline this year’s Winter Bluegrass Concert , Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Wellsboro High School.  Opening act will be the popular regional group, Corning Grass Works.

Setzer and his group are from Wind Gap, PA area.  The five-piece group includes Louis Setzer on guitar, Ron Penska on  bass, Jim Daniels on  fiddle, Danny Stewart Sr. on mandolin and  David Cavage on banjo.

Their repertoire runs from such classic country numbers as “Help Me Make It Through the Night” and “She Thinks I Still Care,” to bluegrass staples such as “Sunny Side of the Mountain” and, of course, “Appalachian Mountain Boys.”

Setzer was the primary founder of the Appalachian Fiddle and Bluegrass Association in 1973.

The Corning Grassworks has been performing acoustic music since 1977. Their musical styles run from old time Appalachian folk tunes to Tin Pan Alley jazz standards.

Band members include singer-songwriter Phil Smock on flat-top guitar and National steel guitar. Bob Rubin, from Whitneyville,PA, plays mandolin and mando-banjo. Jennifer VanEtten holds down the string bass duties and also takes center stage on the flute. Ken VanEtten rounds out the band on banjo and harmonica. He also brings along “a collection of instruments no one in their right mind would want to play.”

He plays the jaw harp, musical saw, singing sewer hose and the ding-dong harmonica. Instruments of his own invention, the Dixieland coffeepot and the bedpan-pipes are showcased. He is the only musician in the world to play a tune on a kitchen sink.

Tickets are  $9.50 general admission and $8.50 for senior citizens.  Children under 12 are free.  There is also a family rate of $25 for immediate families who live in the same house.
